Santa Muerte is a demonic saint masquerading as a “helpful” or “protecting” spirit. Its name translates to “Holy Death”, “Saint Death” or even “god death” to some. Santa Muerte is venerated in Mexico and parts of Central and North America and blends elements of Paganism, Mexican Catholicism, animism, and the occult. La Madrina Favorita – the god mother. La Flaccita (the skinny woman). La Nina Blanca (the White Child). Muerte originally appeared as a male skeletal figure now accepted as a female skeletal figure. Modern votive candles will have this demonic spirit depicted in the same black hooded robe and scythe like the Grim Reaper.
The Bible calls death an “enemy” and it is the last enemy to be destroyed from the earth and from existence. The Lord says in His word, those who love death hate Me also in Exodus 12:23 the spirit of death is the destroyer which is neither “helpful” nor “protecting” – those that think such bizarre things about this goddess of death are deeply deceived.
"But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death.”
Proverbs 8:36
Scholars trace Santa Muerte back to colonial Mexico, where Catholic imagery and animistic pagan beliefs about death (especially from Aztec traditions involving deities like Mictecacihuatl, the Lady of the Dead) began to merge. While small-scale veneration has existed for centuries, Santa Muerte gained wider public attention in the late 20th and early 21st century, especially in the 1990s and 2000s.
No single founder but the person responsible for the rebirth and revival of this demonic cult is a person who built one of the earliest public shrines was established in 2001 in Mexico City. This person was Enriqueta Romero, a woman who placed a life-sized statue of Santa Muerte outside her home in Tepito.
Media, law enforcement, and Bible-believing Christians rightly describe Santa Muerte worship as a “death cult” because it is often linked to Drug cartels and organized crime, Gruesome altars involving human remains from human sacrifice and blood similar to satanism, violent or coercive ritual practices and the ultimate rejection of the God of the Bible, His only begotten Son Jesus and any other official religious authority.
Santa Muerte devotion is not officially recognized by the Catholic Church, and is even condemned by it, but the Santa Muerte death cult draws heavily from Catholic practices and symbols in that practicioners use candles, rosaries, altar-shrines, and prayers in the same manner as the Mary worship of Roman Catholicism. It is so close to Catholicism that celebrants may still identify as Catholic.
This Roman Catholicism is mixed with the native animistic paganism of Central America, particularly the Pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican cultures (Aztec, Maya, etc.) all of which had complex rituals around death deities. Many of the temples used for these practices still stand in the jungles of the Yucatan which I have visited and inspected personally (pictured).
The Roman Catholic and Animism is then combined with the occult particularly Afro-Caribbean and Folk Magic: Some rituals resemble those in Santería, Palo Mayombe, and Curanderismo (folk healing). Esoteric/Occult Influences of tarot cards, pentagrams, the baphomet goat’s head derivation to the Muerte death cult head and spirit summoning etc.
Like the Catholic Mary (contrary to the Biblical Mary), Muerte supposedly listens to the prayers of all and does not discriminate embracing all from all walks of life with easy access. Muerte has no moral standards or demands which makes this demon the matron saint for the the penal system and evil doers. Prayer and Devotion: Followers pray to Santa Muerte for protection, love, money, health, and sometimes revenge or justice. Monthly devotions can take place on the first of each month.
Rituals mainly done at home by Catholics because the Roman Catholic church condemns it but the Mexican pagan Catholics love the evil of this demon goddess. They pray the rosary and burn candles to her at the beginning and the end of the day. Altars (Altares): Devotees often set up home altars with a Santa Muerte statue (typically a skeletal robed figure), along with candles in different colors (each color has a different meaning, e.g., red for love, white for protection, black for vengeance).
Some practitioners use tarot, ritual spellwork, and offerings in occultic magical practices. Worshippers practice crawling on their knees from 50-75 feet away until they reach the idol of Santa Muerte. They give offerings like cigarettes, alcohol, candy, coins, and food to the demonic idol of Muerte.
The Santa Muerte death cult takes part in Dia De Los Muertos – day of the dead on November 1st which is their key date. Dia de las animas (all souls day) supposedly to honor the dead but in actuality honors the “spirit” of death. These dark holidays involve the practices of 9 days of prayers offered for dead loved ones to supposedly pass from purgatory to heaven. This ritual is repeated anually – which means the dead loved ones must have never passed from purgatory if they have to do it again every year.
The truth is that we cannot do anything to break them free of this imaginary place called purgatory. The Bible says that it is appointed for man to die once and after that is the judgement – no purgatory. This is a false practice of the fallible Popes of the fallible Roman Catholic church.
Santa Muerte is often rightly depicted as the Grim Reaper as this demon idol is supposedly a psychopomp, guiding souls to the afterlife like the Ferryman of death on the river Styx in Greek polytheism. Members of this cult believe that the demon spirit of Santa Muerte may be called upon to ease the transition into death which is opposite to what actually happens to occultists who die. Reports are that occultists experience extreme terror, horror and vexation at the point of death because they recognize the agony that now awaits them for an eternity as they are separated from the One true God and His Son Jesus Christ.
Like in heathen animism, Muerte is called on to intervene in spiritual matters involving the dead i.e. to appease an angry or evil spirit. This is odd because Muerte IS an evil spirt and Jesus says that a house divided against itself will not stand. Muerte is also considered a protector against untimely death or harm which is ironic in that most of its worshippers die young and untimely deaths – which is exactly what inviting a demon disguised as a god will do. Devotees have varied beliefs—some hold Catholic views of heaven, hell, and purgatory, while others adopt more pluralistic interpretations.
The Santa Muerte death cult is informal and decentralized in its structure so it is hard to estimate the true number of adherents. Academic estimates suggest between 5 and 12 million followers, primarily in Mexico, Central America, and among Latino communities in the U.S. These followers come from diverse backgrounds, including the marginalized: LGBTQ+ people, sex workers, prisoners, some criminal elements, especially in drug cartels, everyday people—vendors, housewives, and workers who look to the occult for safety and success but are ultimately destroyed by the demons they unknowingly conjure up.
The Lord says, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge – and they lack this knowledge because the reject it.” (Hosea 4:6). The truth is that the more that ignorant people reject the truth of God and indulge in the practice of “death spirit” worship, the more they open themselves and their lives to the destruction of these demons. It doesn’t have to be this way. The occultist can repent and put off their wicked behaviors and demonic idols and instead turn to the One and only living God of LIFE and His Son Jesus whom He raised from the dead after paying our death sentence on the cross! No one receives eternal life and eternal presence with God (from Whom all good things come – James 1:17), by belonging to the right church, denomination, world religion, or by having a particular world view. Rather only those who trust in the Lord Jesus (preached by the Apostles in the Bible) for their own sin. We will not trust in a Savior for sins that we either don’t believe we have or that we think aren’t deserving of hell. But the Bible says that ALL have sin and the wages of that sin is eternal separation from God (death). The good news is that the Bible says that you can know that YOU have eternal life.
