Latter Day Saints – Mormons

Religions, Cults & Worldviews: Valuable Answers for Valid Questions.

The Church of Jesus Christ The Latter Day Saints or “LDS” or “Mormons” claim that they are not only Christian, but according to Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and a score of other LDS writings, they are the only “true” church.

Normally, the full belief system of Mormonism i.e. isn’t shared at the doorstep of houses that are visited by very young LDS missionaries, beliefs such as “As man is, god once was. As god is, man may become” and “god comes from a planet near a star named Kolob” and “Jesus is the spirit-brother of Lucifer (the Devil)“.

The missionaries are attempting to share what they (the missionaries) hold to be true and attempt to give good reasons for what they hold to be “truth” in order to make a drastically different belief system, gradually more palatable for someone raised in the truth of God’s word but who might not have yet embraced those truths as their own i.e. were converted to Christ.

The seemingly innocent preaching of the missionary becomes a major problem/deception when the missionary claims that the LDS church is just another “Christian denomination“. But how can this be, when the God of Christianity is without beginning and end, is not nor ever was man (in the sense they claim), and Jesus is God Almighty, the second person of the Trinity and all things were created through Him, for Him and by Him. (Col 1:15-16)? There are decided differences between the god of the LDS faith and the God of Biblical Christianity. This page will take a look at the beliefs of the LDS faith and compare it with Biblical Christianity, but before we do, let’s work through a quick historical timeline of Mormonism.

Joseph Smith's First Encounter

Smith claimed to go into the forest to find the true church and, like Mohammad, was overwhelmed by a strange frightening ‘power’ and ‘presence’ and thereafter received a vision of God and Jesus:

In late 2013, the Mormon Church published an essay, finally accepting and acknowledging the fact that there were multiple (and conflicting) first vision accounts recorded by Joseph Smith over a number of years. The vision is claimed to have occurred in 1820. However, the only accounts Smith ever wrote or dictated were during 1832, 1835 and 1838 - and they are all very different.

- Jim Whitefield, The First Vision: The Joseph Smith Story citing LDS Essay "The First Vision"

In this vision his god told him to join no church for they are all an abomination to god which contradicts Jesus' words in Scripture,

"I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it."

- Matthew 16:18

In addition to contradicting Jesus, the modern missionary at your doorstep is ALSO contradicting this supposed vision by declaring that the LDS church is just another denomination. How can it be if all the church built by Jesus had somehow become an abomination!? The truth is, it hasn't and this claim of Joseph Smith's would be the claim of every new cult in the 19th and 20th century to lure people away from Bible-teaching churches to the cultist group.

1820

Joseph Smith Lifestyle Following the "Vision"

Prior to starting his own church, Joseph Smith was a treasure seeker and a member of the Masons (a mystical fraternity which denies the God of the Bible and replaces them with their own "all-knowing all-seeing" spirit)

'I first became acquainted with Joseph Smith, Jr. in November, 1825. He was at that time in the employ of a set of men who were called 'money diggers'; and his occupation was that of seeing, or pretending to see by what means of a stone placed in his hat, and his hat closed over his face. In this way he pretended to discover minerals and hidden treasure.

- Father-in-law of Joseph Smith reported in Susquehanna Register, May 1, 1834

Under the date of March 15, 1842 (22 years after his supposed vision) Joseph Smith's entry was as follows:

"In the evening I received the first degree in Free Masonry in the Nauvoo Lodge, assembled in my general business office"

- History of the Church vol. 4, p. 551.

He then went on to state, just one day later, that he had somehow become a Master Mason,

"I was with the Masonic Lodge and rose to the sublime degree"

- ibid., p. 552

1825-1842

Beginning of Mormon Writings

Smith claims to have received some ancient plates with Egyptian Hieroglyphics and the Urim and Thummim. From these he translated the Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrine and Covenants. He claimed that no book on earth (including the Bible) was as 'perfect' as his own Book of Mormon. Then in subsequent years, this perfect book would undergo over 5,000 changes and edits. (Royal Skousen, Professor of Linguistics, Brigham Young University)

1827

Exit Joseph Smith

Mormons taught and practiced polygamy which angered residents (mostly mothers and fathers of underaged girls) of Ohio and the young cult of Joseph Smith was subsequently chased out of Pennsylvania, Ohio. They migrated to Illinois where Smith was jailed for destroying a printing press that exposed his polygamy with already-married Mormon women. He was killed along with his brother Hyrum in a gunfight.

Writing about Joseph Smith, the Mormon church "Prophet" and founder --John Taylor, third president of the Church of Latter Day Saints wrote in the "Gospel Kingdom," page 360:

"Joseph opened the door slightly, and snapped the pistol six successive times... afterwards (I) understood that two or three were wounded by these discharges, two of whom, I am informed, died."

The same account is also in the History of the Church, vol. 6, p. XLI and pages 617-618. - bibleprobe.com

NOTE: This is not the version of the story that modern-day missionaries will tell you. Their version is that Joseph Smith was murdered while in jail in cold blood - thus an innocent persecuted martyr.

1844

Enter Brigham Young

When Joseph Smith died, it created a four-way split of Mormonism with the largest majority following Brigham Young taking over the movement and migrating west along the Oregon Trail.

They came into the Salt Lake Valley and Brigham said his famous, "This is the place" ultimately settling in Northern Utah. Brigham continued to publicly extol the practice of polygamy.

1847

Major Development Major Compromise

The presidency passed from Brigham Young to chosen men from the "12 Mormon apostles".

Due to the illegal practice of polygamy, the small cult stood at risk of extinction and expulsion from the Utah territory by the Federal Government of the United States. In response to this, Wilford Woodruff, the fourth Mormon prophet, issued a manifesto (purportedly from the Mormon god) prohibiting the practice of polygamy. Apparently their god changed his mind about this once god-ordained practice.

The Mormons spread throughout Utah, Northern Arizona, Idaho and Nevada (discovering and settling Las Vegas). All these areas are heavily LDS in population today.

1890

Going Mainstream: From Cult to World Religion

Under tremendous secular and social pressure The LDS church had another alteration to what was formerly considered a Mormon god-ordained practice. They lifted the ban on denying blacks its priesthood which had been in place since the writings of Joseph Smith who declared that Black people bore the mark of Cain due to their refusal to fight in the great rebellion of satan. Apparently the Mormon god changed his mind about this as well.

Mormonism, although claiming 501c3 status as a recipient of members’ tithes, owns profitable multi-billion dollar businesses like ZCMIs, Banks, etc all tax-free.

Today there are nearly 15 million Latter Day Saints around the world and a multitude of splinter groups dating back to the death of Joseph Smith.

1978

This Mormon foundational history stands in stark contrast to the beautiful and pure foundations of Biblical Christianity but is quite comparable to Roman Catholicism and Islam in its non-Biblical hierarchy and antagonism toward Bible-based doctrine (i.e. The teachings of Jesus Himself, The Holy Spirit inspiration of the Apostolic fathers and their writings, their martyrdom and the martyrdom of other believing saints, etc.) It is my belief that due to its worldwide recognition, its unique theology and the large number of adherents, Mormonism has now passed from cult status to that of a small world religion in its own right.

Doctrines of Mormonism - What do Mormons believe?

  • Because LDS churches have the name “Church of Jesus Christ” on the front of the building it does not necessarily mean that the Jesus mentioned is the Jesus Christ of the Bible (remember: same vocabular, different dictionary, which we shall see).
  • People can believe what they want to believe and no one can or should “force” or “coerce” someone to believe a particular belief. However, it is disingenuous to make the claim that the LDS faith is the “same faith” as Biblical Christianity, or even “one of the denominations” of Christianity at all.

Comparing & Contrasting Mormonism and Biblical Christianity

Since this site is dedicated to “truth for saints” I thought it prudent to examine these “truth” claims for the LDS church to see if this belief system is indeed:

  1. Christian (in the Biblical sense)
  2. The “True” Church (as they claim to be)

The doctrines in the table below, outline the major differences of the Mormon god, the Mormon Jesus, and Mormon doctrine versus the Biblical God, The Biblical Jesus, and Biblical doctrine of the historical Christian church.

LDS Doctrine Mormon (LDS) Sources What the Bible Actually Says
God came from a planet near a star named Kolob
God came from a planet near a star named Kolob which is “nigh unto” him. - (Pearl of Great Price: Abraham 3:1-9)
God does not come from a planet in a universe that cannot hold Him:

The Lord said to David, “The heaven and earth cannot hold Me, what house shall you build for Me? 1 Kings 8:27

God created all things seen and unseen (even a star named Kolob and surrounding planets if such existed)

By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. - Hebrews 11:3

He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. - Colossians 1:15-16
God (Heavenly Father) came to Earth as a baby and grew into God

God is Eternal: God is without beginning and end (Alpha and Omega) - Revelation 1:8

God is Immutable: There is no change in God whatsoever Malachi 3:6 and Hebrews 13:8

God is not a man ( nor ever has been man or even a baby) that He should lie - Numbers 23:19

God the Father created the heavens and earth with a word from His mouth (he didn’t come as a baby to something He created - the Son, while fully God became fully man at the same time for redemptive purposes not to "develop into God") - Hebrews 11:3 and Colossians 1:16
There are many gods and goddesses in the heavens
Pearl of Great Price: Abraham 4:1-31
Isaiah 43:11 - “There is no other God besides me, I know not one” says the Lord.

There are many other so-called gods like Allah, Zeus, Vishnu, Buddha but the Bible says that those who claim that they are gods and worship them, are actually worshipping demons. - Deuteronomy 32:17; 1 Corinthians 10:20; Psalm 106:37;
There is no Trinity - God is a godhead of 3 gods with one purpose

Teaching of the Prophet Joeseph Smith, JF Smith p370
Isaiah 43:11 - There is no other God besides Me, I know not one” says the Lord

If there were other supposed gods which are not gods but rather demons. 1 Corinthians 10:20

• Colossians 2:9 - “In Jesus, the FULLNESS of the Godhead dwells BODILY”
• John 1:1 - Jesus is God and Creator of all.
• 1 John 4:9 - Jesus is the ONLY begotten Son (not one of many)

Jesus and Lucifer (satan) are spirit brothers
• LDS Source: Mormon Doctrine, Bruce McConkie p192,590
Jesus created Lucifer:
• John 1:3 - All things were made through Jesus and nothing was made outside of Him.

• Colossians 1:15,16 In Jesus and by Jesus, ALL things in heaven and earth, seen and unseen were made (including satan/devil/Lucifer)
Both so-called brothers, Jesus and Lucifer offered plans, Lucifer's was rejected, and he then rebelled taking a third of heaven’s angels with him

• LDS Source: ”Pearl of Great Price", Book of Moses 4:1-3
God's plan of salvation for the world was put in place long before the world was even created:

• Rom 13:8 Whom He slain before the world’s foundation (only one plan and it was long before anything was created)
• Isaiah 14:12-14 - Lucifer’s only “plan” was (as Mormons plan) that he could be as God - it was THIS pride that caused him to be cast down.
The Mormon Jesus' plan was accepted and he came to Earth
• LDS Source: ”Pearl of Great Price", Book of Moses 4:1-3
• Rom 13:8 Whom He slain before the world’s foundation (only one plan and it was long before anything was created)

• No “separate plan” at all - Jesus thinks and says what the Father thinks and says John 10:30 - “I and My Father are ONE”

The Biblical Gospel preached for 2000 years and remains today:

• 1 Corinthians 15:1-28 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. ...

• Revelation 14:6-7 Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.” (not the Mormon god who did NOT make heaven and earth nor the sea)

Where Mormons Get the Authority for these Doctrines

LDS Writings

  1. Book of Mormon – Comprised of supposed accounts of Jesus visit to the “Indians” of North America. However, not a single artefact has been found to support a single story.
  2. Pearl of Great Price – Contains Abraham in Egypt; Articles of Faith; History etc.
  3. Doctrines and Covenants – compilation of ecclesiastical constitution for LDS church
  4. Bible –  King James Version or Joseph Smith Translation are the only accepted versions.
    1. The KJV Bible is only used in so far as it supports what the founder’s writings declare – just like the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Scientists, Bahai Faith, Islam, etc.

Because, like most cults, Mormons believe the Bible to corrupt (without supporting evidence), it is the least of all LDS scripture.

LDS Prophets

The Mormons, like most cults, begin from the endeavour of a powerful/charismatic personality who controlled the scope of investigation and questioning considered “allowed” by the cult.

  1. Joseph Smith received his revelation and interpreted them privately by peeking into a hat so no one else could see what he was “seeing”:
    1. LDS Source: David Whitmer, An Address to All Believers in Christ, Richmond, Mo.: n.p., 1887, p. 12. – “Joseph Smith would put the seer stone into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine. A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and on that appeared the writing. One character at a time would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English. Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear. ”
    2. LDS Source: The Saints’ Herald, May 19, 1888, p. 310 – Emma Smith, Joseph Smith’s wife, related the following to her son: “In writing for your father I frequently wrote day after day, after sitting by the table close by him, he sitting with his face buried in his hat, with the stone in it, and dictating hour after hour with nothing between us”
  2. Private interpretation is CONTRARY TO THE BIBLE WHICH SAYS: 2Pet 1:20 ‘No scripture came by private interpretation…but men spoke by God…’
  • It is important to note that in the LDS faith, the office of Prophet is the same as the office of  ‘President’ with similar authority as that of the Catholic Pope.

Prophecies of LDS Prophets

Inhabitants on the Moon Prophecies

    1. Oliver B. Huntington, a devout LDS contemporary of Joseph Smith, stated that Smith
taught,”The inhabitants of  the moon are more of a uniform size than the inhabitants
of the earth, being six feet in height. They dress very much like the Quaker style and
                  are quite general in style or fashion of dress. They live to be very old; coming generally;
near a thousand years. This is the description of them as given by Joseph (Smith)
the Seer, and he could see whatever he asked the Father in the name of Jesus to see”
(Journal of Oliver B. Huntington, Vol. II, p. 166).
    2. In over 60 years of close observation of the moon and its surface, no inhabitants found.

Inhabitants of the Sun Prophecy

    1. Brigham Young, second LDS Prophet, said, “Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this
little planet that shines on an evening, called the Moon?… When you inquire about the
inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to
them as the most ignorant of their fellows. So it is with regard to the inhabitants of the
Sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is. Do you think there is any life
there? No question about it; it was not made in vain”
(Journal of Discourses Vol. XIII, p. 271).
    2. This is a Prophet speaking here. His word is supposedly the word of the LDS god and
      1. The Prophet is as infallible as the LDS god (c.f. Roman Catholic Pope) see below:
      2. Brigham Young, “I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture” (Ibid., p. 95).
      3. This “Scripture” about men on the moon as well as the Sun by Brigham Young, ought to raise eyebrows about Brigham Young’s so-called inspired messages.
      4. These points are not raised to “hurt” the Mormon’s feelings or simply disparage an “alternate” worldview. Rather, they are given to alert the person caught up in this flawed faith system so that their eyes might be opened to the truth of the Biblical Gospel that they might be truly saved instead of self-deceived.

Second Coming of Christ Predictions

As the LDS founders were heavily influenced by the Restoration Movement of their time and geographic area (i.e. the “Burned Over District), it can only be expected that a flurry of “Second Coming” prophecies emanate from their leaders. This is identical to the Jehovah’s Witnesses who also came from the Restoration Movement and who also have several failed “Second Coming” prophecies.

    1. Wilford Woodruff, fourth LDS Prophet said on June 27, 1875, “I believe there are many
children now living in the mountains of Israel (Utah) who will never taste death, that is,
they will dwell on the earth at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ”
                  (J. of D., Vol.18, p. 37).
    2. On June 6, 1880, Woodruff again said, “We live in the generation itself when Jesus
Christ will come in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory”
                  (J. of D., Vol. 21, p. 124).
    3. Woodruff died on Sept. 2, 1898, and all the children he spoke of in 1875 are now dead.
                  Therefore, Woodruff’s predictions are false.
    4. Compare this “prophecy” with the clear teaching given in 1Thessalonians 5:1-3
concerning the truth that no date will ever be given concerning the Second Coming
because of the obvious fact that Jesus will come like a thief in the night.

What the Bible Says:

The LORD speaks to His people regarding false prophets in Deuteronomy 18:21-22:

And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?

When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

The Lord makes it clear that all it takes is a single failed prophecy for a person to be disqualified as a “Prophet of God”. God is perfect and speaks perfectly and his prophecies come to pass.

LDS External Issues

  1. Though many archaeologists LDS and secular have tried and tried, still not one monetary
unit or civilization, city, people etc has been found in any of the sites mentioned in
            the Book of Mormon
  2. Smithsonian Institute states in publicly distributed statements that there is no connection between the Book of Mormon and Central and South American archeology (where the events supposedly took place) SIL – 76 Rev. May 1980.
  3. Changes to LDS Scripture – about 4000 changes to the Book of Mormon since the 1830 edition appeared. This is a curious bit of information, considering that all of the odd, extra-biblical teachings of Mormon are predicated on Joe Smith’s claim that the Bible can’t be trusted because it had been “changed” by wicked priests. (see comparison table below)

1830 Book of Mormon

  1. And he said unto me,  Behold, the virgin which thou seest, is the mother of God ….first book of Nephi, P. 25
  2. “And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me again, saying, look! And I looked and beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people; yea, the Everlasting God…” First Book of Nephi, p.26.
  3. “And now limhi was again filled with joy, on learning from the mouth of ammon that King Benjamin had a gift from God…” Book of Mosiah, P. 200

Current Book of Mormon

  1. “And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God… I Nephi 11:18-21)
  2. “…that he was taken by the people; yea, the Son of the everlasting God.” INephi 11:32
  3. “…filled with joy in learning from the mouth of Ammon that King Mosiah had a gift from God…”

TWIN Faiths: Odd Similarities between Islam & Mormonism

An astounding number of likenesses exist between two very unlikely spiritual bedfellows: Islam and Mormonism. I thought I had stumbled on to these similarities myself and was all ready to plant a flag for my discovery when, after minimal research, it became quite obvious that most of these striking similarities were written about as early as 1873! And of course there are scores of web sites that log even more comparisons than the ones I’ve found below…all the same, its still a very interesting correlation which sheds great light on the journey from the status of cult to a profoundly greater status of world religion (which I believe Mormonism is becoming in its own right).

  1. Both faiths were founded by a single solitary young man – Muhammad for Islam and Joseph Smith for Mormonism; Each claiming to be God’s “last great prophet”
  2. Both men were disgruntled with their previous religion: Mohammad with Arabian Polytheism and Smith with Episcopal Christianity. Yet both incorporated polytheist symbols and practices into their church “liturgy” – Both Polytheism and Masonic
  3. Both men claimed extra-Biblical ‘secret’ revelation from God by way of supernatural apparition and both claimed that these revelations came as a result of receiving a visit or visits from an angel;
  4. Mohammed – claimed to be visited by the angel Gabriel and Smith claimed to be visited by the angel “Moroni”.
  5. Both men discredited the Bible as being “changed by wicked and corrupt priests” (neither gave a date for such a change, a person who changed it, or a specific passage that was ‘corrupted’)
  6. Both men wrote a book that contained their secret revelations. Muhammad wrote the Quran and Smith wrote the “Book of Mormon”
  7. Apologists for Islam claim that such a complicated work from such a young uneducated Mohammad is proof of the Quran’s divine inspiration. Apologists for Mormonism claim that such a complicated work from such a young uneducated Joseph Smith is proof of the Book of Mormon’s divine inspirationChristian apologists find neither work to be much of a literary accomplishment as both books borrow and/or plagiarize heavily from the Bible – the very book that both authors condemned as untrustworthy.
  8. The Christology (The person of Christ) of both faiths varies wildly from the Biblical Christology. Islam – Jesus is a prophet only not the Son of God (biblical view); Mormonism – Jesus is one of many gods (not God Almighty) and is the spirit brother of Lucifer/satan (not the creator of Satan as the Bible states).
  9. Both Islam and Mormonism had splits after the death of their founder based on disputed blood lineage of the faith’s successor. Islam – Sunni/Shi’ite and Mormonism – Latter Day Saints/Reorganized Latter Day Saints.
  10. Both faiths have an infamous tie to the date 9/11 – Islam – Islamic fundamentalists cowardly attacked two buildings in New York and slaughtered over 3000 unsuspecting men, women, and children on 9/11/2001 while many Muslims throughout the Middle East were photographed dancing in the streets in celebration. Mormonism – Mormon militia (under the authority of Brigham Young) cowardly attacked 140 unsuspecting men, women, and children as they passed through Southern Utah in covered wagons on 9/11/1857. The Mormon church has tried desperately over the years to revise this blood bath out of historical existence, but the historical record of the “Meadow Valley Massacre” survives to this day.
  11. Both faiths have attempted to erect a monument/memorial to themselves on or quite near the exact site of their most infamous 9/11 atrocities.
  12. Both Mohammad and Smith claimed to be “restoring true religion” to the earth because “Judaism (Islam) and Christianity (Mormonism) disagreed among themselves which was evidence that they were incorrect and illegitimate and therefore true religion was “lost from the earth” and thus both Muhammad and Smith claimed to “restore true religion” to the earth, which was nice of them.
  13. Both Mohammad and Smith were polygamists and made polygamy a major part of their newly introduced faiths.
  14. Both men made the claim that their newly “revealed” books were the most perfect ever written. Then subsequently after the prophet’s death both works underwent significant changes and edits.
  15. Both leaders, Mohammad and Joseph Smith, had chief lieutenants defect from the faith while under their leadership citing “issues” around the translation process of their definitive religious writings: the Qu’ran and the Book of Mormon.
